Lilian Renee Omondi is one of the most seasoned litigation and dispute resolution lawyers with a strong focus on tax litigation in Kenya today. Currently a partner at Oraro & Company Advocates’ Dispute Resolution Practice and Tax Department, Lilian has handled numerous complex and important tax briefs both as an advocate and tax expert in Kenya and across the East African Region. She served as a member of the Tax Appeal Tribunal where she handled and decided dozens of critical tax matters and gained a wealth of experience resolving tax disputes and interpreting Kenya’s tax laws.
Renee is an Advocate of 24 years good standing, a Notary Public, a Certified Public Secretary and Commissioner for Oaths with multi-faceted experience having worked in various professional service firms including law firms and a tax and audit firm. She has rich experience acting for clients in notable matters in key corporate and commercial law practice areas including Construction, Real Estates, Energy Supply, Telecommunication, Manufacturing Companies and Not for Profit Organizations among others.
Renee started her legal practice at Christine Oraro & Co. Advocates where she worked from 1999 to 2012 rising through the ranks to Senior Associate. She set up L. Renee Omondi & Company Advocates, a boutique corporate commercial law firm, serving as its Managing Partner between 2012 to 2018. She joined Earnest & Martin Associates, a tax planning, compliance, training and capacity building firm as the Head of Legal and tax from 2018 to October 2020.
In October 2020, Renee joined Oraro & Company as a Partner in the Dispute Resolution Practice. Speaking of Renee’s move into the firm, Oraro & Company Senior Partner, Chacha Odera, said that her entry enhances the firm’s reputation as a “dispute resolution powerhouse.” He added: “She brings with her an intricate mix of deep legal knowledge, client care and people management – very commendable skills.”
Renee has deep experience in leadership and management having served as Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Council Member for eight (8) years and as the Vice President of the premier lawyers’ association for a total of four (4) years. In addition, Renee has also served as a board member in various reputable institutions including the Auctioneers Licensing Board, the Tobacco Control Board and Tax Appeals Tribunal. Recently, she served as a Member of the Senior Counsel Committee tasked with selecting Advocates for admission to the rank of Senior Counsel.
She has wide experience advising on a wide range of tax matters including domestic and international tax, value added tax (VAT), income tax, capital gains tax, transfer pricing and tax litigation. Her recent experience includes advising a Credit Company on Transfer pricing and Thin capitalization. She also represented a manufacturing company dealing in alcoholic beverages against a tax claim for KES 18 billion.
Renee was also part of the team that successfully represented a major grain importer at the Tax Appeal Tribunal against a tax demand of KES 21.4 million and is currently defending KRA’s appeal at the High Court. Presently, Renee is also involved in advising a major International School on how to structure and validate the salary project tool and taxable benefit on gains or profit of employment income.
She has written extensively and established herself as a thought leader in tax law. Her recent publications are in the areas of Digital Service Tax, The VAT (Electronic Tax Invoices) Regulations, 2020 and The VAT (Digital Market Place Supply) Regulations, 2020. Recently, she analyzed the implication of recent tax decisions including the High Court Decision suspending the Newly introduced Minimum Tax.
Renee holds a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree (with Merit) from the University of Liverpool in Technology and Intellectual Property Law. She graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from Nagpur University in 1996 and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. She is a member of Law Society of Kenya, East African Law Society (EALS), Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Kenya), Commonwealth Lawyers Association and Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU).
