Leyla beat many other young arbitrators from across the continent to win the continent’s most prestigious arbitration award for young practitioners. The continental award follows the award of ‘the Young ADR Practitioner of the Year Award‘ by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Kenya) Excellence Awards in 2022. In 2020, Leyla was one of the nominees for Africa’s 50 Most Promising Young Arbitration Practitioners Award by Association of Young Arbitrators (AYA).
Leyla is a visionary legal practitioner renowned for the scrupulous process with which she approaches her tasks and service to her clients. She sits at the top of the continent as an international arbitration counsel being the Secretary of LCIA African Users Council where a Former Attorney of Kenya is Vice President. Her triple awards as LSK Young Lawyer of the Year 2020, CIARB (K) Young ADR Practitioner of the Year 2022 and AFAA African Young Arbitrator of the Year 2023 confirm that Leyla is esteemed by her peers and seniors as one of the rising stars of the Kenyan Bar and African Arbitration Scene.
A Senior Associate in the Dispute Resolution department of TripleOKLaw Advocates, Leyla specializes in commercial litigation, employment & labour disputes, defamation and constitutional & human rights matters. She is well versed with anti-money laundering and bribery legislation in Kenya, the civil and criminal liability of the companies and its management, the obligation of companies to establish and maintain internal reporting procedures and has advised a leading telecommunication company in this regard. She also represents clients in both mediation and arbitration proceedings.
Leyla is an Advocate, a Commissioner of oaths, an Arbitrator and a Certified Mediator who is accredited by the Mediation Accreditation Committee (MAC) of the Judiciary of Kenya. She sits as a member of the Commercial Bar Bench Committee; the Court Annexed Mediation Committee and was instrumental in the formation of the Kadhis Court Bar Bench Committee where she is currently the co-convener. Leyla has been trained as a Tribunal Secretary and holds an LLM in International Trade and Investment Law in Africa from the University of Pretoria.
She is an arbitrator and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London & Kenya branch). Leyla is currently the Secretary of the LCIA African Users Council, the Co-Chair of the Lagos Court of Arbitration Young Arbitrators Network (LCA-YAN), the African Ambassador of Arbitrator Intelligence, the Chair of the ICC Kenya, Customs and Trade Facilitation Commission and member of the Law Society of Kenya ADR Committee.
As a published writer, Leyla has co-authored the Kenyan Chapter of the International Comparative Legal Guide – Business Crime 2019 ( http://bit.ly/2XAHO6S ) as well Kenya’s chapter, within The Legal 500 Comparative Guide on Bribery & Corruption 2019 (http://bit.ly/2QRNfaTlegal500report ).
