The Second Edition of the Dr. Kariuki Muigua, PhD Annual ADR-Essay Award was launched on Wednesday 7th September 2023 by the Young Arbiters Society University of Nairobi (UoN) Chapter. The Society held the inaugural Dr. Kariuki Muigua Ph.D Annual ADR-Essay Award in September 2021.
The Essay Award which is open to all Undergraduate Law Students in Kenya was hosted by Young Arbiters Society University Nairobi Chapter in honour of their patron Dr. Kairuki Muigua, PhD for his immense scholarly contribution and organizational leadership in promoting and supporting arbitration in Kenya especially among the youth.
“We, as a society, say Asante Daktari for without you the Dr. Kariuki Muigua Ph.D Annual ADR-Essay award would not have been possible. Asante sana Daktari!” stated Young Arbiters Society in a press statement on its social media channels about the Award.
Your Arbiters Society seeks to empower Young Alternative Dispute Resolution Practitioners by advocating for, encouraging, promoting and taking part in the practice of various Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms. The Society achieves this by promoting the research, training, practice, networking and consulting on various Alternative Dispute Resolution processes and techniques such as arbitration, mediation, traditional dispute resolution, negotiation and conciliation.
Dr. Kariuki Muigua says he supports the eponymous award to encourage young upcoming lawyers and arbitrators to dream big and avoid fear of success as they pursue the journey of success and in the quest to realize their “predetermined goals.” Dr. Muigua has been at the forefront in mentoring young lawyers and arbitrators across the country both as an ADR practitioner and trainer.
Dr. Kariuki Muigua is one of Kenya’s top 10 Arbitrators and ADR Practitioners and has been recognized and listed by the peer-reviewed Chambers Global Law Directory in the last 3 years. He is also a distinguished Law Scholar and accomplished Mediator and Adjudicator and Senior Lawyer of more than 30 years good standing and the Managing Partner of Kariuki Muigua & Company Advocates, one of Kenya’s leading dispute resolution boutique law firms.
Dr. Kariuki Muigua is a Chartered Arbitrator and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) with enviable experience in both international and domestic dispute forums both as arbitrator and counsel. He is an accredited faculty member of Nairobi Centre of International Arbitration (NCIA), he is a Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Regional Trustee for Africa and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nairobi.
In 2022, Dr. Kariuki Muigua made history by scooping the two most prestigious ADR awards, African Arbitrator of the Year and the African Arbitrator of the Year Awards. Dr. Kariuki Muigua was also the recipient of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Kenya Branch) Lifetime Achievement Award and the Nairobi Legal Awards ADR Practitioner of the Year in 2021. In 2023, Dr.Kariuki Muigua was nominated by the Republic of Kenya as Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. He also the CIARB African Trustee Emeritus having served with distinction from 2019 to 2022.
Dr. Muigua has published widely in areas of Environmental Law, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), Access to Justice and Environment and Natural Resources Management. According to Google Scholar, his peer-reviewed articles which number more than two dozen have been cited more than 500 hundred times in scholarly publications in the last couple of years. Dr. Muigua is also an author and his most recent book is also Kenya’s First ESG Book: Embracing Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) tenets for Sustainable Development” (Glenwood, Nairobi, July 2023).
